If like me you’ve ever found yourself staring longingly at a board full of coffee options but without a clue as to which one to choose, you are in luck, because I have compiled a list of the most common coffee types to shed some light. Whether you want a quick pick me up, a gentle.
1. Espresso, Double Espresso & Lungo Espresso
If you’re confused about the difference between espresso, double espresso and lungo then you’re not alone! Here’s a quick explanation: Espresso – a shot of strong black coffee made by forcing steam through ground coffee beans. Double espresso – 2 shots of the same. Lungo – one shot with twice the amount of water.
A cappuccino has a shot of espresso at the bottom, then a layer of steamed milk, followed by a layer of milk foam at the top (in about equal measure). A good afternoon drink if you want something gentle on your senses.

This is basically an espresso in a demitasse cup with a little bit of foamed milk on top. It’s like a cross between an espresso and a cappuccino.
A latte, short for “cafè latte”, is a coffee made with espresso and steamed milk, and literally means “Milk coffee” in Italian. There is about twice as much milk as there is espresso in this drink. If you don’t like the taste of coffee but want the caffeine, this might be the right one for you!
5. Flat White
Smaller than a latte, this coffee is also made with espresso and hot steamed milk, but rather than being milky coffee, this is like a velvety, even tastier espresso. Done well, this drink is divine.
6. Café Au Lait
Like a flat white, but with French Press Coffee instead of espresso, and scalded milk rather than steamed milk. C’est délicieux!
2 shots of espresso topped with hot water. Simple, black, all you need to attack… the day!
The child’s coffee as I like to think of it… or coffee with chocolate! Espresso, topped with twice as much hot chocolate and whipped cream on top! Yum! They say that chocolate helps to boost your memory, so if you’re in study mode, this could be just right for you. The cream on top is optional.
9. Irish Coffee
If you don’t have to go back to work, then you might be up for some Irish coffee! A teaspoon of sugar, 4 parts hot coffee, 2 parts Irish whiskey and 1.5 parts cream. Just what you need to wake up after work and get in the party mood.
