If you ever need to drive more than 30 minutes in a car, you should definitely compile some kind of playlist to keep you company on the road. Here are a few ideas for you:
1. Bombay Bicycle Club – Shuffle
“Weight is coming off / Soaring high / Pleading you to stay / Come alive”
Upbeat, flowing, romantic… Like the beginning of any road trip, this song conveys the excitement we feel when we first turn on the ignition and get on the road.
2. Hozier – From Eden
A more down-tempo song to ease into that first stretch of the journey, this song by Hozier seem to talk about love growing tired, but always trying. “Honey, you’re familiar like my mirror years ago / Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword”
3. Arcade Fire – Keep the Car Running
“If some night I don’t come home / Please don’t think I’ve left you alone / The same place animals go when they die / You can’t climb across a mountain so high”
Another upbeat one to change up the tempo. The art of a good playlist is tricky to master, but you definitely need rises and falls.
4. Cat Power – He War
A fast-paced song by this amazing female singer to stop you from falling asleep and keep your fingers drumming on the steering wheel. Great for motorways!
5. Bombay Bicycle Club – Rinse Me Down
Bombay Bicycle Club are fantastic for driving, because they are both upbeat and soulful. This music is great for bringing a little sunshine regardless of what the weather is doing outside.
6. Daniela Andrade – Where is my mind? (cover)
This gentle rendition of the Pixies’ song is great for when you just want to let your mind relax and disconnect. Daniela is a YouTube success story and all of her music is road-trip-worthy so definitely worth a listen, even if you’re just hanging out at home.
7. Rusted Root – Send me on my way
If you ever watched Matilda, you might remember this song from the end of the film. A very happy, upbeat song to sing your lungs out to: “I would like to reach out my hand / I may see you, I may tell you to run / You know what they say about the young”
8. The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)
No road trip whatsoever is complete without this smashing song. An 80s classic, featuring in Marshall and Ted’s road trips in How I Met Your Mother, this is definitely one for the mixtape: “But I would walk five hundred miles / And I would walk five hundred more / Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles / To fall down at your door” Tadada tadada… etc.!
9. Johnny Cash – Hurt
Sometimes you need a little melancholia to really appreciate the highs. This music is here to give you just that. Johnny Cash’s heartfelt rendition will have you sighing and maybe tearing up a little bit: “I wear this crown of thorns / Upon my liar’s chair / Full of broken thoughts / I cannot repair”
What road trip is complete without some self-reflection?
10. U2 – Beautiful Day
And then the lift. After some serious self-reflection everyone needs an upwards soar, which is just what this music provides. Windows down, wind through your hair, sun in the sky… even if it’s raining, you will feel great listening to this. “Touch me / Take me to that other place / Teach me / I know I’m not a hopeless case”
And there you have it, 10 songs to blast in your car and enjoy the road!
