If you’ve never heard of Download Festival before, we’ll quickly fill you in: it’s an annual summer Rock festival held in Britain, in Leicestershire, and the most popular rock and heavy metal fest in the country. Some of the biggest names this year include the likes of Korn, Rammstein, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden, to name but a few. We thought it would be fun to introduce you to some of the lesser-known bands of this year’s event.
1. Milk Teeth
This British Punk Rock band from Gloustershire with lead vocalist Becky Blomfield reminds us of 90s grunge with a little Rammstein. Check them out on Bandcamp. They are but a few years old and were signed onto Hopeless Records in 2015, but they are well worth listening to. Our favorite tune from their Vile Child album is Driveway Birthday.
New Jersey Punk Rappers H09909 (pronounced HORROR) consist of “TheOGM” (aka Jean) and “Yetti999” (aka Eaddy). Check out their hit Bone Collector here. They’ve been featured on Red Bull’s ‘Get to Know’ and on “10 new artists you need to know September 2014” in Rolling Stone Magazine. If you like Atari Teenage Riot, you’ll probably like these guys.
3. Muncie Girls
Indie punk band Muncie Girls is both poppy and hard, like indie punk should be. The trio recently released their album ‘From Caplan to Belsize’ which you can check out here. We love Lande Hekt’s soothing vocals and the just-right strength of the drums. It’s very easy to listen to and quick to get into. Featured in Punk News and Upset Magazine, we reckon we’ll be hearing a lot more from this band in the near future.
Hailing from Scotland, this four-piece experimental rock band are finally getting the recognition they deserve for their surreal melodies. Check out So Long Gone, one of our favorites. They’ve been featured on Punktastic and you can check out more of their music on bandcamp here. Their influences include the likes of Rage Against The Machine, Florence Welch, Sia and Incubus. We’re excited to hear more about them in the future!
5. Savage Messiah
A heavy metal band from London, Savage Messiah have been around for several years but are still on the road to fame. Check out Hellblazer, our favorite song of theirs, and their website here. For some good old fashioned head banging.
The Weirds are a band of hypnotic psych-rockers from Leeds, England. The guys have known each other since they were just 15 at school, and describe their music both as “amphibious” and “progressive dissonance”. Check them out on soundcloud here to get a taste of their sound. We can definitely see ourselves getting into this as we power through homework before a weekend of fun. We think that this summer is going to be even better now that you have all of this new music to check out and play as the soundtrack to your life. Have a rockin’ time!
