The internet is full of ideas for having a great summer, like going to the beach, getting a tan, getting your “beach body”. We think, however, that your time can be better spent than looking a certain way. When you’re young and you have time to take off from school in the summer, there are so many wonderful things you can do, so many life-changing books to read, instruments to play, and experiences to have. So we say forget about the beach body for a minute, focus on your experiences in this short, mysterious life that we have.
Get off Facebook, stop wondering about how to be more interesting and go and have experiences. They are all around you. Grab a bike and go explore, bring your camera with you and take photos of the world. See a sunset, watch a sunrise, stay up all night talking. Do things which are out of the ordinary which you will always remember. Allow yourself to be spontaneous!
You don’t have to travel far. If you have a bike you can just cycle to the next town or nearest city and see what it has to offer! Check out a new coffee shop, go to a free museum, see a local attraction. Take a bus to the nearest big city and explore for the day.
3. Get out of your comfort zone
Talk to someone new, try a new hairstyle, listen to a type of music you don’t normally listen to… you might be surprised by the things you discover about yourself. You might make an amazing new friend, find a look that suits you more than any other, or find a band that expresses something you cannot. You have nothing to lose.
4. Master a skill
Summers go by quickly but they’re long enough to learn a new skill. Always wanted to become a photography expert? Now is your chance to figure out all the complicated settings on your dad’s camera. Have a deep-seated desire to learn how to play the trumpet? Endless summer days are the perfect time to practice. Want to knit? YouTube tutorials are endlessly available to help you out.
5. Take photos of the unusual
Cracks in the pavement, spider webs, your mother cooking… There are so many moments and perspectives to capture and long summer days give you so much time to explore.
6. Watch some foreign films
Netflix has dozens of great foreign films to watch. “A girl walks home at night” about a vampire skater girl in Iran, “Amelie” about an introverted and charming French girl, and so many more! The best way to expand your mind is to consume other cultures, to immerse yourself in other worlds.
7. Read some philosophers to expand your mind
Sartre is a great philosopher to read if you find yourself pondering the meaning of life and existence. You can also check out the show Cosmos on Netflix if you really want to ponder at how amazing our existence is.
